Finding your correct hanger is as easy as 1-2-3
In our previous two blog posts, we discussed why replaceable rear derailleur hangers exist, and what are rear dropouts and the role they play in regards to what rear derailleur hanger is used on any given bike. In this post, we discuss the “how and why” behind the “1-2-3” user experience found on the derailleurhanger.com website – the process you and others use to quickly find, purchase and receive the correct hanger. In addition to the “1-2-3” process, we also offer personalized assistance for customers in those rare instances where we do not have in the derailleurhanger.com database information regarding the hanger required for your bike.
On the derailleurhanger.com home page, you will find it easy to follow our 1-2-3 process – so easy, you really don’t’ need to read this blog post. However, we decided to write the blog post for those who might like to understand the logic behind our 1-2-3 process.
So…the process is (drumroll please!)…
- Step 1: Select the Bike Manufacturer of your bike (using the pull-down menu); You can look at the hanger pictures displayed to see if you see your hanger
- Step 2: Select the Model for your bike within that Bike Manufacturer (again, using the pull-down menu); You can look at the hanger pictures displayed to see if you see your hanger
- Step 3: Click on “Add to Cart” for the correct Hanger for your Bike Manufacturer and Model; Please make sure to carefully review the picture(s) of each hanger displayed before placing your order
NOTE: If we do not have your Bike Model in our database, please click on the “Let us help” or the link to our Alternate Search page. And, if at any time you need assistance, please click on our “Contact” link and submit your request for personalized assistance and include a picture of your hanger and rear dropout in the Contact form.
Very simple (and purposely so).
Below are pictures of the drop-down menus during each stage of the process…
Step #1: Select the Bike Manufacturer
Step #2: Pull down the “Select Bike Model” drop-down and select your Bike Model
Step #3: Confirm the correct hanger for your bike (looking at the picture) and click on “Add to Cart”
Rationale Behind Our “1-2-3” Process:
Almost every customer knows the bike manufacturer and model for his or her bike. Generally, both the manufacturer and model are evident from those names being painted on the bike frame. Yes…there are some folks who might have a bike where they don’t know the manufacturer (e.g., someone painted over the manufacturer name on the bike), but that is rare. Hence our 1-2-3 process.
We also collect information regarding what hanger is used by year for each bike model and manufacturer. However, very few bike owners know what year their bike was manufactured, rendering that information not useful. In addition, we know of cases where a bike manufacturer has used two different hangers in the same year (and therefore two different rear dropouts – see our previous blog post). Therefore, we don’t include “Year” in our “1-2-3” process, but do provide year information on our website.
Also, we don’t list all bike manufacturers on our website. There are simply too many bike manufacturers — large, small and custom — and the pull-down list would be so long as to be unusable on a website. Therefore, we include in our list the larger or more common bike manufacturers. For similar reasons, we also don’t list all bike models for each bike manufacturer.
We attend the major bike shows each year (Eurobike and Interbike) to learn from bike manufacturers what hangers they are using on bike models each year. We also reach out to bike manufacturers to get new information for hangers used on bike models each year.
We hope this blog post has been informative and useful, providing some background regarding the rationale behind the “1-2-3” selection process used on the derailleurhanger.com website.
