Let’s celebrate National Bike Month in the US

In the US, May is National Bike Month, which was established in 1956 and is sponsored by The League of American Bicyclists. There are numerous cycling events typically planned during May as part of National Bike Month, such as National Bike to Work Week, which is normally celebrated the third week of May (but has been moved to 21-27 September 2020 this year due to COVID) and National Bike to Work Day (which will be held on 22 September 2020).

The League of American Bicyclists has asked that we unite through National Bike Month by sharing photos of family or solo rides using #BikesUniteHere are the #BikesUnite details on The League of American Bicyclists website.

With a similar uplifting perspective, Jenn Dice, the COO of People for Bikes, wrote a wonderful op-ed for Bicycle Retailer and Industry News entitled “Some good news for bicycling” published on 30 April 2020. In the article Dice cites numerous examples of how cycling has helped balance or offset the sad news and negative impacts associated with COVID. Examples that Dice cited include (in part) families riding and spending time together, mayors closing or limiting traffic on streets to make it safer to ride in cities, and cleaner air due to fewer cars and trucks on the road. Dice also cites how bikes and riding will be key to counter-balance the fact that commuters will most likely be less willing to use mass transit until COVID is under control (such as when a vaccine is widely available). Dice then provides several examples regarding how those of us in the bike industry can help promote and reinforce the many positive aspects that bikes and cycling can have on society and the economy.

The bicycle retail industry has experienced a short-term burst of activity during COVID as people have dusted off old bikes and purchased new bikes to get out and ride solo or as a family, and to exercise in a safe manner under social distancing practices. At derailleurhanger.com we have experienced a surge in orders of hangers used on older bikes. We have also worked hard to respond in a timely manner to the many requests we receive each day from y’all to help find the correct replacement hanger for a given bike. Please continue to reach out to us as needed for assistance.
